Introduction to FRP Compression-molded Manhole Covers


FRP compression-molded manhole covers are manhole cover products made using advanced compression molding technology. With their excellent performance, they are widely used in various engineering scenarios.

Material Selection

Glass Fiber: When the requirement for the load-bearing tonnage of manhole covers is not high, glass fiber is usually selected as the reinforcing material. Glass fiber has the advantages of relatively low cost and a mature molding process. The manhole covers made of it can meet the usage requirements of places such as general sidewalks and residential community roads. There is less vehicle traffic in these areas, and the requirement for the load-bearing capacity of manhole covers is relatively low.

Basalt Fiber: For application scenarios with high requirements for load-bearing tonnage, basalt fiber becomes the ideal choice. Manhole covers made of basalt fiber have higher strength and can withstand greater pressure. However, it has certain limitations. Currently, only black manhole covers can be produced. These manhole covers are commonly used on roads where heavy vehicles frequently travel, such as ports, large-scale logistics parks, and roads around airport runways. The vehicle loads in these places are large, and the requirements for the load-bearing performance of manhole covers are extremely strict.

Common Specifications

Tonnage: There are various load-bearing tonnages for common FRP compression-molded manhole covers. Among them, 20-ton manhole covers are suitable for internal roads of ordinary residential communities, small-sized parking lots, etc. These areas mainly have small cars passing through, and the 20-ton load-bearing capacity is sufficient to ensure safe use. 50-ton manhole covers can be used in non-motor vehicle lanes of general urban roads and some areas where light trucks occasionally pass. The manhole covers with a maximum tonnage of up to 100 tons are mainly applied to key sections that bear the frequent rolling of heavy-loaded vehicles, such as heavy-industrial factory areas and approach roads of large-scale bridges.

Diameter: Among circular manhole covers, common diameter specifications are 600mm, 700mm, 800mm, etc. A 600-mm-diameter manhole cover is generally used for small-sized pipeline wellheads, such as rainwater branch pipe wellheads in residential communities. A 700-mm- diameter manhole cover is more common and is widely used for sewage and rainwater wellheads on various urban municipal roads. An 800-mm-diameter manhole cover is mostly used for large -scale drainage pipeline wellheads or some places with special requirements for the coverage area of wellheads. In addition to circular ones, there are currently square and rectangular manhole covers. Common specifications for square manhole covers are 500mm×500mm, 600mm×600mm, etc., and for rectangular manhole covers, the specifications are such as 800mm×600mm, etc. These special-shaped manhole covers are mainly used for some wellheads with special shapes or areas with high requirements for the coordination with the surrounding environment, such as squares, pedestrian streets, and other places, and can be customized and installed according to the ground paving design.

Main Applications

Municipal Engineering: In the urban drainage system, FRP compression-molded manhole covers are used to cover sewage wells, rainwater wells, and other wellheads, preventing people or objects from falling into the wells and ensuring the normal operation of the drainage pipeline at the same time. In power and communication projects, manhole covers are used to cover cable wells and communication wells, facilitating maintenance personnel to maintain and repair underground cable equipment and ensuring the stable operation of the urban power supply and communication network.

Industrial Field: In factory areas, manhole covers are used for various industrial pipeline wellheads, such as material conveying pipeline wells in chemical enterprises, and drainage and ventilation pipeline wells in steel mills. Due to their certain corrosion resistance, they can adapt to the erosion of chemical substances in the industrial environment and ensure the safety and smooth operation of industrial production.

Civil Construction: Around residential communities and commercial buildings, manhole covers are used for various pipeline wellheads in the community, such as water supply wells and heating wells. The combination of aesthetics and practicality can not only meet functional requirements but also integrate with the surrounding environment, enhancing the overall image of the building area.

General Instructions for FRP Compression-molded Products

 

1. Regarding Mechanical Indicators

For FRP compression-molded products, the mechanical indicators are positively correlated with the content of glass fibers in the raw material SMC. Without special requirements, the glass fiber content is generally around 22%. The corresponding tensile strength is generally greater than 50MPa, and the flexural strength is generally greater than 150MPa, subject to the finished product test.

 

2. Regarding Flame Retardancy

For products with flame retardancy requirements, the oxygen index can generally be made to be above 32. Of course, a higher oxygen index can also be achieved, subject to specific requirements.

 

3. Regarding Errors

Under normal circumstances, the dimensional error is approximately 0.3 millimeters. However, in the case of long strip-shaped and flat-shaped compression-molded products, the error may sometimes exceed 0.5mm.

 

4. Regarding Surface Coatings

(1) FRP products molded without a coating are generally not recommended for direct outdoor use. Due to long-term weathering, the surface layer of the products will be powdered. When viewed from the side against the light, many shiny fibers can be seen.

(2) For products such as compression-molded water channels, since an aesthetic appearance is not required, it is sufficient to leave enough corrosion allowance during the design.

(3) For highway anti-glare panels, in order to avoid powdering, the current surface coating is a combination of a chicken skin texture on the product surface and powder spraying. This coating is a patented technology that can ensure that the appearance will not be powdered within 8 years. That is to say, theoretically, the FRP body inside the coating will not be eroded until 8 years later, and the overall appearance can withstand more than 20 years. This is a cost-balanced solution because this technology does not require a high cost.

(4) The best way to ensure that the product appearance is not eroded by wind and rain is, of course, baking paint, which is currently the most costly manufacturing method. This is commonly seen in the outer shell parts of trucks.

(5) The product uses high-grade color paste instead of a coating to resist ultraviolet rays and weathering. For example, aviation warning balls use this technology. To some extent, this is also a kind of attempt because aviation warning balls place more emphasis on not fading rather than surface powdering.

 

5. Regarding Molds

For these compression-molded products, there must be a sufficient quantity of demand to be able to share the cost of the molds. Of course, for products for which we already have molds, they can be directly purchased without any quantity restrictions.

 

6. Regarding the Maximum Size of Compression-molded Products

Our company can undertake compression-molded products with a maximum size of 4000×3000. However, it is worth mentioning that the larger the product, the higher the mold cost and test cost.

 

7. Regarding the Transport Volume

The products uploaded by our company have already taken into account how to minimize the overall volume during transportation. For box-shaped compression-molded products, slopes have been considered to minimize the overall volume when stacking. If you must purchase box-shaped products with a square shape, the freight may be higher than the product price.

 

8. Regarding Design

Many people may still not be able to find where these products are used from the products we have uploaded. In fact, if you can find the previous metal products in our company or in this project and replace them with these FRP compression-molded products, it will be a good design. For example, we replaced the original aluminum shell at the rear of the searchlight with an FRP compression-molded one, and replaced the wheel arches on both sides of the tractor seat made of iron sheet with FRP ones. These are all good designs.
