Introduction to FRP Compression-molded Automobile Parts

(1) Parts of the Truck Cab

Whether it is a low-speed scraping collision or a high-speed severe collision, the bumper can play a vital protective role, reducing the damage degree of the vehicle's main structure and ensuring the safety of passengers inside the vehicle.

4. Corner Wraps: Situated at the corner connection between the front fascia and the side panels of the front enclosure, they not only serve as a decorative element to make the lines of the cab more smooth and natural but also enhance the structural strength of the connection, improving the stability of the entire cab shell.

5. Fenders: Located above the wheels, their main function is to prevent sand, mud, stones, etc. splashed by the wheels from hitting the side of the vehicle body, which could damage the paint and sheet metal parts on the side of the vehicle body. At the same time, they can also optimize the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle to a certain extent and reduce wind resistance.

6. Headlight Mounting Brackets: Used to fix the headlights, ensuring that the headlights remain stable during the vehicle's operation and providing a good lighting effect. The brackets need to have precise installation dimensions and sufficient strength to adapt to the vibrations and impacts under different road conditions.

 

(2) Engine Protection Parts

 

1. Engine Undercover: Installed at the bottom of the engine, it is like putting on a sturdy armor for the engine. It can effectively block the direct impact of sand, gravel, mud, and other debris splashing on the road on the engine, avoiding direct contact between the engine and hard objects on the ground when the vehicle bottoms out, greatly reducing the risk of engine damage and extending the engine's service life.

 

(3) Other Parts

 

1. Engine Hood: Usually composed of an outer panel and an inner panel, with a heat insulation layer in the middle, it is mainly used to protect the engine from the external environment. It can isolate the noise and heat generated during the engine's operation, improving the comfort inside the vehicle. It can also play a role in beautifying the engine compartment, making the engine compartment look neater and more orderly. The engine hoods of some high-performance vehicles are also specially designed to optimize aerodynamic performance and enhance the engine's working efficiency.

2. Body Decorative Parts - Spoilers: Installed on the outside of the vehicle body, such as at the rear of the vehicle or on the roof. Spoilers can change the direction of the air flow around the vehicle during driving, reducing air resistance and lift, and improving the stability and handling of the vehicle at high speeds. Through reasonable design of the shape and size of the spoiler, the vehicle can run more smoothly at high speeds, reduce fuel consumption, and also increase the vehicle's sporty appearance and aesthetic appeal.

3. Interior Parts: Utilizing the good formability and designability of FRP compression-molded products, various uniquely shaped interior parts can be created, such as dashboard decorative panels and door interior panels. These parts are not only beautiful and generous but also can enhance the overall texture and comfort inside the vehicle. At the same time, they have certain sound insulation and heat insulation properties.

 

II. Excellent Mechanical Properties

 

1. High Strength: FRP compression-molded products have a remarkable tensile strength, which can reach 200 - 300MPa, and a bending strength between 250 - 400MPa, far exceeding that of ordinary steel. This enables them to easily withstand various complex stresses during the vehicle's operation. For example, when the truck cab is driving at high speed, components such as the front fascia and side panels of the front enclosure have to bear strong wind pressure, and in case of a collision, these components have to bear a huge impact force. However, relying on their high-strength characteristics, FRP compression-molded products can effectively ensure the stability of the cab structure and provide reliable protection for passengers inside the vehicle and key equipment.

2. High Toughness: Their impact resistance performance is also quite excellent, with an impact strength reaching 25 - 40kJ/m². During the vehicle's operation, various unexpected situations are inevitable, such as the impact of flying stones and minor collisions. The good impact toughness of FRP compression-molded products can effectively absorb and disperse the impact force, preventing components from cracking or being damaged due to the impact, and ensuring the normal operation of the vehicle and driving safety.

 

III. Good High-temperature Resistance Performance

 

Under normal circumstances, FRP compression-molded products can work stably in an environment with a temperature range of 80 - 120℃. For the parts around the vehicle engine, this temperature tolerance range is sufficient to cope with the heat generated during the normal operation of the engine. Taking the engine undercover and engine hood as examples, when the engine is working, they can withstand the high temperature emitted by the engine, and are not prone to problems such as deformation, aging, or decomposition, thus ensuring the stable operation of the vehicle under normal working conditions. At the same time, these components can also block the heat transfer from the engine to the interior of the vehicle to a certain extent, improving the comfort inside the vehicle.

General Instructions for FRP Compression-molded Products

 

1. Regarding Mechanical Indicators

For FRP compression-molded products, the mechanical indicators are positively correlated with the content of glass fibers in the raw material SMC. Without special requirements, the glass fiber content is generally around 22%. The corresponding tensile strength is generally greater than 50MPa, and the flexural strength is generally greater than 150MPa, subject to the finished product test.

 

2. Regarding Flame Retardancy

For products with flame retardancy requirements, the oxygen index can generally be made to be above 32. Of course, a higher oxygen index can also be achieved, subject to specific requirements.

 

3. Regarding Errors

Under normal circumstances, the dimensional error is approximately 0.3 millimeters. However, in the case of long strip-shaped and flat-shaped compression-molded products, the error may sometimes exceed 0.5mm.

 

4. Regarding Surface Coatings

(1) FRP products molded without a coating are generally not recommended for direct outdoor use. Due to long-term weathering, the surface layer of the products will be powdered. When viewed from the side against the light, many shiny fibers can be seen.

(2) For products such as compression-molded water channels, since an aesthetic appearance is not required, it is sufficient to leave enough corrosion allowance during the design.

(3) For highway anti-glare panels, in order to avoid powdering, the current surface coating is a combination of a chicken skin texture on the product surface and powder spraying. This coating is a patented technology that can ensure that the appearance will not be powdered within 8 years. That is to say, theoretically, the FRP body inside the coating will not be eroded until 8 years later, and the overall appearance can withstand more than 20 years. This is a cost-balanced solution because this technology does not require a high cost.

(4) The best way to ensure that the product appearance is not eroded by wind and rain is, of course, baking paint, which is currently the most costly manufacturing method. This is commonly seen in the outer shell parts of trucks.

(5) The product uses high-grade color paste instead of a coating to resist ultraviolet rays and weathering. For example, aviation warning balls use this technology. To some extent, this is also a kind of attempt because aviation warning balls place more emphasis on not fading rather than surface powdering.

 

5. Regarding Molds

For these compression-molded products, there must be a sufficient quantity of demand to be able to share the cost of the molds. Of course, for products for which we already have molds, they can be directly purchased without any quantity restrictions.

 

6. Regarding the Maximum Size of Compression-molded Products

Our company can undertake compression-molded products with a maximum size of 4000×3000. However, it is worth mentioning that the larger the product, the higher the mold cost and test cost.

 

7. Regarding the Transport Volume

The products uploaded by our company have already taken into account how to minimize the overall volume during transportation. For box-shaped compression-molded products, slopes have been considered to minimize the overall volume when stacking. If you must purchase box-shaped products with a square shape, the freight may be higher than the product price.

 

8. Regarding Design

Many people may still not be able to find where these products are used from the products we have uploaded. In fact, if you can find the previous metal products in our company or in this project and replace them with these FRP compression-molded products, it will be a good design. For example, we replaced the original aluminum shell at the rear of the searchlight with an FRP compression-molded one, and replaced the wheel arches on both sides of the tractor seat made of iron sheet with FRP ones. These are all good designs.
